Parenting coordinators have specialized, extensive training to work with high conflict, post-decree cases. In other words, for cases where the parents are still arguing and tense years after the divorce or separation, and the conflict is affecting the children. The parenting coordinator assists the families at implementing their parenting plans. This assistance reduces the conflict the parents and children are experiencing, and helps to reduce re-litigation by keeping the families out of court.

A parenting coordinator mediates and teaches the parents communication, parenting, and conflict management skills. When the parents have issues that they can not reach agreement on, the parenting coordinator, within specific guidelines, makes the decision for the parents. The goal of the parenting coordinator is to empower parents with the knowledge and skills to resolve future conflicts independently, and out of the courts.

It is important to realize that when the parenting coordinator mediates with the family, there are differences from traditional mediation. There is no privilege of confidentiality regarding communications between the parenting coordinator and the parents. The parenting coordinator may also meet with the children of the parents to understand how the parents’ conflict is affecting the children.

The details of each case have to be addressed between the parenting coordinator and the parents.
